Broadband is a wireless data transmission format that is available over cable, fibre, or DSL networks. It helps transport multiple signals and traffic types over long distances with fast connectivity.

Types

As weve discussed, broadband connections are more efficient and faster than old ones including dial-up. As technology evolves, new types of broadband connections are also emerging. ISPs take into account the rural or urban area of their customer when deciding what kind of broadband to offer. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

In a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), internet traffic is sent and received using the frequency set by a telephone company to send out high speed information over ordinary phone lines.


DSL internet requires a physical modem and is subscription-based. There are two types of DSL transmission:


Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a form of digital subscriber line that connects to the public switched telephone network. It transmits internet data and voice signals over wires, and is made up of a pair of phone connections. In case disruption occurs on one end, this has an impact on the other end as well.


Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL)

Cable Modems

Cable modems are comparable to DSL internet, with the exception of a cable connection instead of phone lines. Cable is faster than DSL, but speeds may vary depending on how many devices are connected and what package you have chosen.


Satellite Internet

With the introduction of satellite TV, broadband service is becoming more economical for those living in rural areas where fiber or cable connection is not feasible. It is also very reliable and fast at 17Mbps.


WiFi

WiFi refers to a high-speed internet connection that can only be available within a short distance of the wireless router. Fibre-optic

Fibre-optic uses light to transfer data across fibre. Made of a thin glass wire inside a protective cable, it is the newest option for DSL service. Fibre-optics offer some advantages over other broadband connections—but they are not yet fully developed and still have limited service areas.

All three types of broadband share some similar features like service, speed and reliability. For the office, wired connections are best because they are more reliable and always available. For people living in areas with a cellular connection to the internet, wireless is best because its faster and more efficient.
